Letting Her Rest

It All Begins Here

That night, none of us slept.

We were awake — but not really present — each lost in our own thoughts, gathering whatever strength we could for the decision we knew was coming.

By morning, we went back to the hospital.

Bella’s dad had arrived. Seeing all of us somehow made it more real — and more unbearable.

We spoke to the vet. His voice was calm, but his words were heavy.

“When you brought her in, I would have said fifty percent. Now… the machine isn’t even giving us a jaundice count anymore. It’s gone worse.”

They brought Bella in.

She didn’t move. She didn’t lift her head. She just closed her eyes and lay there while we stood around her — her people — completely shattered.

We called Ratul again. We asked the doctors, through tears, through disbelief.

And the answer was the same.

“If this were our baby,” they said, “we would let her go. Not make her suffer anymore.”

Even if she survived, they told us, her life would be filled with severe limitations — movement, awareness, comfort. They didn’t see a real chance of her coming back to herself.

And Bella had always been herself — full of attitude, bark, sass, and spirit.

So in that moment, we made the hardest decision of our lives.

Ria and Aaryan somehow found the courage to fill out the forms — to choose cremation through the hospital, to request her paw imprints, the small keepsakes that would become our forever memories.

We called our people.

Nishtha. Timse. Aditya arrived.
Shashwat and Namrata were already on their way from work.

We brought her favorite blanket. Her bed. Her toys.

We kissed her — again and again.
We told her not to worry about us.
We told her she was loved beyond measure.
We told her she could go… in peace.

And just like that, my life in San Jose — the life that was just me and Bella — came to an end.

Bella’s Whispers

It All Begins Here

We came home together-without our heartbeat!

Everyone was there — our chosen family — standing with us, holding space in the quiet that Bella had left behind. We chose not to bring Achilles, Cookie, or Doby inside. This knew this as Bella’s home.

But Achilles didn’t understand rules or logic or loss.

He walked in anyway.

He searched.

Under the bed.
Behind the couch.
Inside the closet.

All of Bella’s favorite hiding spots.

Watching him look for her — so certain she had to be somewhere — was unbearable. It was as if he was asking the question none of us were too afraid to say out loud.

That evening, I left for LA with Ria and Aaryan.

I couldn’t stay. I didn’t have the courage to spend even one night in the home that had been mine and Bella’s — now suddenly just mine.

Some places are not just walls and rooms.
They are love, routines, footsteps, and barking echoes.

And without her, that home was too quiet to bear.

Bella (somewhere, probably judging us gently):
I was never lost. I just went ahead to make sure it’s safe. Don’t worry — I’ll wait.

That Night Without Her…

It All Begins Here

I didn’t sleep at all that night.

I lay still, afraid that moving might wake her up — Bella, curled up by my feet the way she always slept. I could almost feel the warmth, the weight, the comfort she gave without ever trying.

By morning, the messages started coming in.

Everyone who knew Bella was shocked. Heartbroken. Reaching out with stories, photos, memories. That was when it truly hit me how deeply she had been loved — not just by us, but by an entire circle of humans and dogs who had been claimed by her presence.

She hadn’t just lived with us.
She had lived with people.

That morning, it was raining — in LA and in San Jose.

And then there was a rainbow.

In both places.

It felt impossible and perfect at the same time, as if Bella was already running free somewhere else — light, pain-free, grinning at us in that way that always said, I’m fine. Don’t be dramatic.

We smiled through tears.

And somewhere between grief and gratitude, I knew something had shifted.

With my children’s love, support, and strength, I decided to let go of the apartment — and of the life that belonged to just me and Bella.

It wasn’t an ending.

It was the beginning of the next chapter — one she had quietly prepared me for all along.

The Quiet Ending — What Stayed After She Left

It All Begins Here

The apartment was quiet after Bella left.

Not peaceful — just… wrong.

Her bowls stayed where they were. Her leash hung by the door. Her bed still carried the shape of her curled-up body, as if she might walk back in and reclaim it any second.

The walks felt empty. Mornings felt late. Even silence sounded different without her bark announcing the world.

But slowly, something stayed.

She stayed in the routines we couldn’t unlearn.
In the pauses before opening the door.
In the instinct to look down and smile.

She stayed in the community that still asked, “Where’s Bella?”
In the friends who loved her like family.
In the stories that made us laugh through tears.

Bella never really left.

She simply stopped needing her body.

And somewhere between grief and gratitude, we learned this:

Some souls don’t fade.
They just become part of you.

Forever. 🐾🤍.

What We Carried Forward

It All Begins Here

Bella left us, but she stayed.

We marked her presence on our skin — with her paw tattooed on our hands — a promise that she would walk with us for the rest of our lives. Nishtha honored her with a tattoo too, something she would never have done for anyone else. Timse honored her by running one of the most difficult marathons, carrying Bella in every mile. Achilles keeps her close in the most tender way — sleeping with a pillow shaped like her, her picture always near him.

Her love didn’t end.
It multiplied.

Ria and Aaryan have Bella’s large photo framed in their room, surrounded by little things that remind them of her — fun memories, moments, pieces of joy. She still belongs there, watching over them the way she always did.

And I carry her too.

Bella had a favorite teddy. I take it with me everywhere — just like I wanted to take her. I bought her an airplane bag once, dreaming of traveling with her, but I never got that chance. Now, this teddy travels with me instead. Every city. Every place. Every chapter.

It sits beside me the way she would have.

Bella lived with us.
Bella grew with us.
And Bella will stay with us — forever.

Some love doesn’t end.
